One weekend in, and that gear is already funky!
We may only be one week into our Flames season, but that gear is funky! Not only does it stink, but leave it unattended and you can be stuck with mold or mildew growing on it. The odor itself is caused by bacteria growing permeated by the sweat during hockey. These simple steps will help you keep that equipment fresh all year long.
Air it out!
The easiest way to ensure the smell doesn’t get really bad is to simply air it out after each practice. Find a space in your house and setup a storage locker like one of our dads did last year.
If you don’t have the space to setup shelving, at least get something you can hang the equipment and let it air out properly. A simple drying rack will do, or a specific hockey rack.
Stuck on the road?
If you are stuck on the road, products like the Ever Bamboo Hockey Gear Deodorizer helps with the apple when you don’t have time to get the back out and air the equipment properly from a hotel.
WASH IT!
It’s really that simple. Most of your equipment can be washed in the laundry at home. Some companies offer commercial grade services, but really, just throw it in the wash. Coach Jeremy of howtohockey provides a simple guide for you DIYers.
Got your own secrets to keeping your gear clean, comment on facebook or @ us on twitter with your solutions and you can even include your pictures!

Ever wonder what full ice feels like for 7-8 year olds?
Still not sold on half ice programs? Even with the countless research provided by Hockey Canada, there are still some doubters of the half ice programs.
USA Hockey put together an incredible video to really put it all into perspective. Have a look for yourself.
Hockey Dad’s are eagerly embracing the new Half-Ice Novice program. It’s all about more. More ice time, more puck touches, and more fun!

Check these silky mitts!
This post by Hockey Canada shows off a young superstar named Rylynn, with a set of the silkiest mitts we’ve ever seen. Want to incorporate this routine at home? It’s simple, all you need is a golf ball and your stick. I suggest not doing it on Mom’s clean hardwood floors 😮
Grab a golf ball from Dad’s bag (I’m sure he won’t mind) and get going! Inexpensive and easy to find, golf balls are perfect for working on those quick hands. Not the ball you want to shoot or deke with but a golf ball is small and light allowing you to turn those hands over quicker than with any other stickhandling tool.
When you get really good, throw in a balance board and do it just like Rylynn.
If you can’t get a golf ball, these make perfect gifts for the kids.

Hockey Canada’s DRILL OF THE MONTH: Skating Skills – Toe on Puck
This simple drill gets players working their edges without losing balance (carving edges with one leg raised). All you need to run this simple drill are standard hockey pucks. The game is faster than ever, however, the ability to use and control your edges provides the opportunity to create deception and confusion for your opponents. Combining that with unpredictable changes of direction, however so slightly, can give players the ability to get around defenders.
